Our Story

The Weaver's Hut operates from the village of Donnybrook in the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, with administrative offices in Merrivale and a shop in Howick and have been operating for 19 years.

Donnybrook, a rural outpost, is tucked away in the foothills of the Southern Drakensburg. Domestic livestock graze freely in the village and the local Zulu people still use horses as a means of transport. The Weaver's Hut became operational fourteen years ago. It's primary objective was, and still is, to provide employment and skills development for the upliftment of the local poverty-stricken women. It has sustained the families of an average of 25 people over the years.

The rugs are woven in 100% pure wool. The designs used are influenced by classical African, Eastern and Modern motifs, as well as abstract, geometric and contemporary designs.

The colours used vary from earthy tones of terra cotta, rust, chocolate brown and ochre to the more classical tones of maroon, navy, gold, cream and hunter's green. Brighter designer colours such as lime green, orange, red, yellow, purple, blues and of course pastels are also available. A total of 180 colours and their tones and shades are used.

The rugs are entirely hand-woven using a very tight flat weave. This guarantees a product of the highest quality and durability, resulting in years of hardwearing service. The rugs can be washed, dry-cleaned or vacuumed. The dyes are colorfast with the added bonus of moth- proofed wool.

The Weaver's Hut enjoys a professional relationship with the interior decor industry, and weaves and designs for hotels, lodges, B & B's, offices and domestic homesteads.

The Weaver's Hut weaves according to their client's specifications, and operates for a local, national and international market and clientele.
